At long last it has arrived. British singer-songwriter-guitarist James Bay has finally released his long awaited debut album Chaos And The Calm. Despite this being his debut album, Bay has been around for a few years and has already developed quite the following around the world which has helped propel his album up to number 10 on iTunes.
Chaos And The Calm is primarily an aggregation of songs that Bay has previously released through his EPs and as singles however he has added a few new songs as well. Although this is typical of debut albums, it’s atypical for so many of those songs to have gained so much attention prior to the album release. This really speaks to the quality of the music James Bay puts out and to his immense talent. “When We Were On Fire”, “Move Together”, and my personal favorite “Need The Sun To Break” were all released in 2013 as part of his debut EP, The Dark of the Morning, and yet play a huge part in his new album. Chaos And The Calm also includes Bay’s two singles and most popular songs “Let It Go” and “Hold Back The River” both of which were released in 2014.
Bay begins and ends his album with brand new songs “Craving” and “Incomplete” and does a great job of mixing his older songs with brand new songs throughout the album. Many of these new songs are of the same ilk as the rest however he really branches out into a new sound, which he pulls off by the way, in “Best Fake Smile” and “Collide.” I’ve said this already but this album does an amazing job of showcasing Bay’s natural talent and abilities.
If you have any doubts about Bay’s amazing talent, check out the video below of him covering Kanye, Rihanna, and Sir Paul’s song Four Five Seconds for BBC Radio 1. Prepare to be amazed. You can also check out Chaos And The Calm below or on Spotify.
